Alabama Catholics: Your Vote Matters For US Senate

Dear Alabama Catholic,

I write to you as a cradle Catholic and an active member of my local parish in the Virginia countryside who cares deeply about our faith, our Church, our country, and the future of my three children and six grandchildren. I am sure you are a lot like me in this respect.

Even though I do not live in Alabama, what happens on December 12 in the Alabama special election to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the United States Senate is of tremendous importance to me and to every American. Despite the almost unprecedented national media spotlight on this campaign, making an informed decision at the polls and voting your conscience on December 12 may not be as straightforward as it seems.

That’s why I want to give you some truly shocking information about Doug Jones, the Democrat candidate in Alabama’s U.S. Senate election. You probably haven’t seen it in the newspapers you read, or on the television and radio programs you listen to. Not even from your parish priest as he delivers his sermon/homily.

You see, the views Doug Jones holds on abortion are beyond radical. Quite simply, Doug Jones does not believe abortion should be restricted in any way. The website PolitiFact has reproduced part of the September 27 interview of Doug Jones by Chuck Todd, host of the MSNBC program MTP Daily. I believe it will interest you:

Chuck Todd: What are the limitations that you believe should be in the law when it comes to an abortion?

Doug Jones: I am a firm believer that a woman should have the freedom to choose what happens to her own body. And I’m going to stand up for that, and I’m going to make sure that continues to happen. I want to make sure that as we go forward, people have access to contraception, they have access to the abortion that they might need, if that’s what they choose to do.

Chuck Todd: So you wouldn’t be in favor of legislation that said, ban abortion after 20 weeks or something like that?

Doug Jones: I’m not in favor of anything that is going to infringe on a woman’s right and her freedom to choose.

In his own words, Doug Jones spells it out:

  • He opposes the abortion ban at 20 weeks, when a baby in the womb begins to feel pain.
  • He would not restrict partial-birth abortion, the grisly, barbaric practice banned in most of the world that involves killing a baby moments before he or she is delivered.
  • His position supports abortion-on- demand, without exception.

There is little — or no — difference between what Doug Jones believes and what Planned Parenthood, the nation’s #1 abortion provider, believes.

No wonder the Doug Jones campaign website says Mr. Jones “stands with Planned Parenthood.”

Is this the kind of person you want representing you in the United States Senate?

Despite what you may think of the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, Judge Roy Moore, his position on abortion is 100 percent opposite of that of Mr. Jones.

According to Judge Moore’s campaign website, “I oppose abortion, same-sex marriage, civil unions, and all other threats to the traditional family order. Federal funding for Planned Parenthood or any form of abortion should be stopped.”

The extremist abortion “rights” views held by Doug Jones are part and parcel of a political party — the Democrats — that has been taken over by leaders who think religion and morality should not be a factor in how you vote, who seek to drive Christians out of government, and who disparage traditional Christianity in general, and Catholics and Catholicism specifically—who even seek to omit any passing mention of God! For example:

√ The Democrats’ presidential candidate last year, Hillary Clinton, was easily the most pro-taxpayer funded abortion presidential candidate in our history. She even opposes restrictions on late-term abortions. At a world women’s forum in 2015, she declared that “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.” She wants to eliminate the Hyde Amendment, which protects taxpayer dollars from being used for abortions. And she is an ardent supporter of Planned Parenthood.

A Clinton presidency would have declared open war on Christian values. And as its last presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton is still the spokesperson of the mainstream (leftist) Democratic Party.

√ The leader of the Democrats’ other wing, the “progressive” wing, is Bernie Sanders, who is even further to the left than Clinton—in fact, he is not formally a Democrat but openly a Socialist who votes with the Democrats.

As the top Democrat-voting member of the Senate Budget Committee, he grilled and opposed President Trump’s nominee to be Deputy Secretary of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Voigt. Voigt’s major offense? He had publicly defended his alma mater, a private Christian college, for firing a professor who had declared that Muslims and Christians “worship the same God.” Voight had written that Muslims “do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son…” Sanders said Voigt’s views were “hateful.”

In other words, he was to be rejected because of his personal religious beliefs, defending a private college’s action, delivered as a private citizen long before becoming a nominee for a federal office. That shows how far Bernie Sanders, still the leader of the Democrats’ other wing, will go to keep professing Christians out of government service.

√ Clinton and Sanders are hardly alone in trying to drive professing Christians out of public service. For example, Sanders was joined by 11 other Democrat Senators in opposing the nomination of Roger Severino, a practicing Catholic, to be President Trump’s assistant secretary of human rights at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Severino’s offenses? He is against same-sex marriages, and supported the Kentucky clerk who instituted a “no licenses” policy in her office (these views are consistent with Catholic doctrine).

√ There are countless other examples, and a recent one that got national attention was when Senator Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, attacked Trump judicial nominee Amy Coney Barrett, a Notre Dame law professor. Feinstein found it “of concern” that Barrett’s past speeches revealed how Catholic “dogma lives loudly” within her. In other words, if you want to get a federal nomination from Democrats, you had better not believe in Catholic “dogma”— or at least not express such heretical beliefs.

√ Despite an earlier victory in the U.S. Supreme Court and the Trump administration’s “conscience protection” order rolling back the Obamacare mandate that employers cover contraception and abortion-inducing drugs, the Catholic charity Little Sisters of the Poor have been forced to go back to court to defend their religious exemption. Democrat attorneys general in Pennsylvania and California are suing Little Sisters of the Poor to take away the right this worthy organization only recently won. Can anyone doubt the motivation behind this legal action is anti-Catholic, anti-Christian bigotry?

But what does this have to do with the Alabama U.S. Senate election?

Plenty. The Democrats seek to “nationalize” the Alabama U.S. Senate campaign. Even in a conservative state like Alabama, they have made it a litmus test to show support for national Democrat anti-religious liberty, anti- Catholic policies. Doug Jones is now a surrogate for national Democrats while the Republican candidate, Roy Moore, is a surrogate for President Trump and conservatives.

The positions of the Trump administration and the Republicans are pro-religion, pro-Christian, and pro-Catholic, in stark contrast to the positions of the Democrats. One example is President Trump’s appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

The choice, then, is clear: Clinton-Sanders-Feinstein and their anti-religious views versus President Trump and his pro-religious actions.

I urge you: On December 12, vote for Judge Roy Moore and for the pro-life, pro-religious record of the Trump administration, and against the anti-religious, anti-Christian, anti-Catholic policies of the Democratic Party, especially the extreme abortion-on- demand platform endorsed by Doug Jones.

Sincerely,
