Is it smart politics for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to prove to voters that the GOP-controlled Senate is capable of “governing” by continuing business as usual in Washington?

Senator McConnell has the right idea. Bipartisanship is important to voters, even if it means Republicans spend more than President Obama requests. McConnell’s strategy will help all Republican candidates on the ballot this November.

If “governing” means increasing federal spending even more than what President Obama wants, Senator McConnell is going in the wrong direction. Compromising with Democrats always leads to more and bigger government, and it will not impress anyone on Election Day.
