Many conservatives are fearful that the Democrat opposition to the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh may escalate into violence, attempting to prevent the Senate from voting later this month.
A solid majority of 73.8% agree that “the radical Democrats opposing Kavanaugh will do anything to stop him, and will turn to violence if that is the only way to prevent a Senate vote to confirm him.” Another 8.8% believe that the protests will continue to be disruptive, but not violent, while 17.5% are undecided.
The four days of Senate committee hearings on Kavanaugh were repeatedly disrupted by outbursts from members of the public, and protestors had to be forcibly removed to allow the committee to do its work. The Capitol Police have said that 227 were arrested and fined.
A committee vote on Kavanaugh could take place as early as this week, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has pledged a floor vote before the end of the month.
With Kavanaugh considered likely to have the support of at least 50 of the 51 Republican senators (Vice President Mike Pence would break a tie), Democrats appear to have little chance of winning a vote. If the protestors truly believe that another constitutionalist justice will be a disaster for the country, they might decide that a resort to violence would be justified.
