The move to end Donald Trump’s presidency by impeachment is underway, and Trump supporters would be wise to take it seriously.
Just weeks after Trump took office, a poll showed the public equally divided on whether to impeach him. City councils from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Berkeley, California have called on the House to begin impeachment proceedings against the President. Almost one million people have signed an impeachment petition promoted by Impeach Trump Now.
Responding to this intense grass roots pressure, House Democrats have already made one attempt to begin an impeachment-oriented investigation of the President through New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s H Res 111. Although the House Judiciary Committee did not approve Nadler’s resolution, the ominous response of the Committee’s Republicans was that it was unnecessary since they were already looking into many of the items listed by Nadler.
In other words, the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee (where impeachment begins) are already investigating some of the very matters that Democrats expect to lead to impeachment.
Can we expect the House Republicans to defend the President from partisan attacks and impeachment? The record of the past few months offers little encouragement.
The Democrats found enough support among House Republicans to give them a majority against building a wall on the Mexican border.
The Democrats found support even among the Republican leadership to write a budget that was virtually dictated by Democrats.
Nearly everything done by the President has been followed by Congressional Republicans issuing statements that they disagree with him.
Can the Democrats win over a couple of dozen Republicans to give them a House majority in favor of impeachment? Don’t bet against it.
House Republicans need to hear from Trump supporters that we will not stand for this talk about impeachment. They need to know that any vote to impeach Trump will mean defeat in 2018, either in a primary or in November.
The House is coming under strong pressure to oppose Trump, even to the point of impeachment. That pressure will achieve its goal unless we meet it with countervailing pressure.
