Even liberal Aaron Blake of the Washington Post understands how important partisan control of the Senate will be in determining the long-term future of America.  This is about not just replacing Kennedy, but perhaps also Ginsberg or Breyer.

If the GOP retains control, new Supreme Court justices will insist on obedience to the Constitution.  If Democrats win a majority (or form a majority coalition with anti-Trump Republican senators), they can block the nomination of constitutional conservatives and hope that a future Democratic president will pack the Court with liberals who have no respect for the Constitution.
