Is this the best they can come up with? Anti-Trump politicians and media have been desperately seeking evidence that Trump and the Russians conspired to somehow “rig” the 2016 election. Even when Obama’s director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper, testified that there was no such evidence, the frantic search continued.
Now The Washington Post has given front-page coverage to a leak revealing that the FBI was allowed to spy on businessman Carter Page, described as an “adviser” to presidential candidate Donald Trump.”
Only desperation could explain giving such prominence to a story with so little significance.
Consider what the Post itself tells us.
Page’s role as an “adviser” was minimal. He was never even given a meeting with Trump.
Page was not allowed to speak on behalf of the Trump campaign. This was especially true when he travelled to Russia last year.
The little contact that Page is alleged to have had with a key Russian in 2016 has not been proven, and Page has denied it.
Page has not been charged with any crime, and The Post makes clear that charges are unlikely.
Nothing really seems to have changed since last year, when Post reporter Josh Rogin said that “the likelihood that Page is the center of a Kremlin-Trump conspiracy to undermine the U.S. democratic system is extremely low. He is simply not senior enough to play that role for either side.”
The only real value of this story is that now we know that at least one person linked to the Trump campaign was in fact being spied on by the U.S. government. The Post’s anonymous sources insist he was the only one. Do you believe them?
