In what may be an attempt to rally conservative supporters of Sen. Ted Cruz, Donald Trump has begun proposing a method of blocking the immigration of radical Islamic terrorists that is similar to a bill introduced by Cruz last November.
Following the Orlando massacre carried out by Islamic terrorist Omar Mateen, Trump moved away from his previous call for a ban on all Muslim immigration. Instead he recommended prohibiting immigration from those countries with a history of terrorism. The Terrorist Refugee Infiltration Prevention Act of 2015, introduced by Cruz even before last year’s San Bernadino terrorist massacre, also focuses on protecting the US from areas known to harbor terrorists.
The Cruz bill prohibits most immigration from Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen, and assigns the Secretary of State the responsibility for adding other nations to the list if they contain “terrorist-controlled territory.” The only immigration permitted would be for those who qualify as refugees from genocide and “have undergone the highest level of security screening.”
The Senate has taken no action on the Cruz bill, but perhaps Trump’s statements will encourage the Judiciary Committee to hold hearings and move the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.
