Conservatives are impressed and encouraged by President Trump’s first speech to Congress, according to a poll by FedUp PAC.
Trump’s speech addressed the priority issues for conservatives, with 92% saying that the President covered issues very important to them. His comments on national security, illegal aliens, repeal of ObamaCare, regulatory and tax relief, and putting Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court left no doubt that he intends to keep the campaign promises that united most conservatives behind him last year.
In fact, 63% say the speech convinced them that Trump “is likely to be a better president than I expected,” while another 35% said their previous opinion has been confirmed.
Immigration policy is the most important single issue, named by 38%. That is followed by defense spending at 19% and cutting taxes at 17%.
Conservatives are worried that the news media will not report the speech fairly, with 71% saying that cannot be expected. Such concerns appear vindicated from the relentlessly negative editorials of such liberal bastions as The New York Times and The Washington Post. The Post accused him of “an appeal to raw prejudice” while the Times declared him guilty of stoking “fears, grievances, and prejudices.” The Post’s Fact Checker, even when confirming the truth of Trump’s statements, struggled to find reasons to quibble.
FedUp PAC is a grass roots organization that wants constitutional conservatives to take over the GOP because Americans are fed up with the Republican establishment. It is not affiliated with any candidate or committee.
